Abstract :
The use of a mobile PR (packet radio) network for car-to-car communication in a densely populated city is discussed. A simulation of this system includes a radio channel access algorithm to overcome difficulties in establishing communications. The simulation is set against a realistic background using a simplified road network with roads intersecting at right angles, traffic lights at most four-way intersections, and an occasional one way-street. The simulation takes into account certain communication difficulties due to the environment, such as wave reflection at the walls of buildings (i.e., shadowing). It is shown that through shadowing a slot can be used more often; but there are only small differences between the simulation results with or without reflection and shadowing. The simulation program includes different overviews for the road networks with cars and the radio channels being accessed. Most parameters, such as the number of channels and the maximum number of cars, can be set by the user
