Abstract
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired over the Mediterranean Sea from the First European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-1 showing sea surface manifestations of katabatic wind fields are presented. By using a mesoscale atmospheric model, the wind field associated with cold air flowing from the mountains through a broad valley in Calabria (southern Italy) onto the sea is calculated and compared with the wind field derived from an ERS-1 SAR image
