  • Abstract
The authors consider service architectures for the advanced intelligent network (AIN) using different service logic node topologies, including most of the combinations that are planned for deployment between 1990 and 1993. Specifically, a small but well understood set of services is discussed, and the realization of these services using different physical implementations (e.g. service control points, adjunct, service nodes) is investigated. Implementation of these services on each architecture is considered on a case-by-case basis, including interworking with relevant network entities (e.g., SSP, or service switching point, and SMS, or service management system). The ability of each type of architecture to support these particular services is discussed. The ability of all of the architectures to provide any service is also stressed. The authors conclude by identifying situations and offering recommendations as to where a particular architecture type would be to the service´s advantage
