Abstract :
The evolution of sensor-based avionics systems from autonomous to federated to integrated systems is discussed. The generation of integrated sensor avionics represents a major step in avionics integration through the application of common digital processing modules. As the development of this first generation of integrated avionics is continuing, rapid technological advance continues. This advance promises an even greater level of integration, resource sharing, and cost-effectiveness. Therefore, the pending retrofit of legacy aircraft such as the F-15 and F-16 will be presented with the unique opportunity to consider a much more evolved approach to sensor-based avionics integration which: uses the lessons learned from the first generation of integrated avionics development; takes advantage of impressive, mid-90´s technological advance; is founded upon open, industry standard interfaces; and leverages the near-term products of current laboratory and system development efforts
