Abstract
Diagnostics for digital components must deal with factors that are absent or much less significant in analog equipment. Difficulties that arise from the absence of functionally identifiable units (a CPU serves many functions), the impossibility of exhaustive testing, the existence of software failures, and the prevalence of transient and intermittent failures are discussed. The benefits of digital technology with respect to diagnostics are briefly examined
