Abstract :
A case is presented for neural networks as a complement to traditional approaches. It is argued that when a procedure is well defined, traditional approaches work well, but the neural network will be superior for those cases where the procedure is not yet known, where associations are used extensively, or where operations are performed directly on real-time data. It is suggested that neural networks might provide a solution to escalating software costs, more user friendly interfaces, and a better match to new technologies such as optics
