  • Abstract
The author argues that there are reasons to believe that the European photovoltaics industry is indeed poised on the brink of rapid commercial growth, leading to broadly-based industry viability. He describes how these reasons have less to do with ambitious cost reduction targets, however seductive, than with the mechanisms of getting the product to market and the wider ambitions of society for alternative and cleaner forms of energy. He examines what role the European industry has to play in helping to bring about this better future, and gives a brief look at the European PV industry today
