  • Abstract
This paper lists some problems facing the engineering profession, particularly, its bad image, the difficulty students have in transferring between tertiary institutions, and the lack of interest the public have in engineering. It shows that many of these problems are the result of two fundamental causes: the structure of the engineering degree and the content of the degree. The paper suggests changes that could be made to both these aspects of the engineering degree, and shows how these changes could solve many of the problems listed at the beginning of the paper. It ends by suggesting some areas in which further investigation is necessary, particularly the bureaucracy required to administer the new degree structure
