Abstract
The electric vehicle, which pre-dates the internal combustion engine, is now being seriously considered as a long term substitute for the present petrol and diesel powered vehicles. It is seen as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative which will play an increasing role in the provision of personal and public transportation. While, in the past, electric vehicle development was championed by enthusiasts and occasionally promoted by internal engine vehicle manufacturers for “prestige” reasons, today´s developments are now being championed by all the major auto manufacturers in the USA, Europe and Japan with some encouragement (in some instances, prodding and regulation) from these countries´ respective governments. The aim of this paper is to describe the work currently being done in the department of Electrical Engineering, University of Zimbabwe in Electrical Vehicle Development
