Abstract
A two-stage access algorithm for use by a portable radio was studied through computer simulation. The algorithm consists of a relative power channel ranking stage followed by a multiple-block error check. It was found that this algorithm improved transmission quality at access in a cochannel interference environment by as much as 7 dB compared to power-ranking of channels alone, assuming a 99% statistical reliability criterion. System implications include that the algorithm may facilitate the reliable use of simple and cost-effective port configurations for UDPC (Universal Digital Portable Communications), if incorporated into the user´s portable radio terminal
