Abstract :
In modern day data networks, with the increased focus on aspects like network security, band-width optimization and intrusion detection, network monitoring has become an integral part of network design. This paper discusses a method for accelerating the network policing using node capabilities. Presently network monitoring requires the hardware component regeneration tap for packet duplication and this component needs to be present in several network points. The above tap will do un-conditional packet duplication which is in-efficient. This also makes the analyzing devices do overwork in inspecting the packets. This paper thus brings out some of the in-efficiencies in the existing network monitoring systems and justifies an alternate method for doing the same. It presents a suggestive fresh view on the factors that could prove instrumental in improving monitoring of enterprise data networks by re-using some of the forwarding capabilities in the network nodes. The material also attempts to provide an extended outlook on the immense possibilities offered by the new method.
