Abstract :
This paper discusses end face attributes for the multifiber MT connector family to insure connector stability and optimum intermating performance between connectors from multiple manufacturers. The MT connector has become the multifiber connector of choice; therefore, the intermating of MT connectors from different suppliers is inevitable. End face standardization will insure common performance of the connector from all manufacturers. Multimode multifiber connectors are polished such that the end faces are nominally flat and perpendicular. Surface polishing processes and equipment produce end faces which deviate slightly from perfect form. These deviations influence optical performance and mechanical stability during connector intermating. Flat polished end face attributes are characterized using theoretical results from Hertz contact modeling, and validated with experimental results. This paper forms the basis to characterize criteria limits for these attributes
