Abstract
Cloud computing is gaining in popularity. At the same time, the global community is becoming increasingly conscious about sustainability. While intuitively Cloud computing, due to resource consolidation and virtualization, economies of large scale, delivery on demand, etc., has the potential to be more sustainable than well tuned data centers, this is not guaranteed. To evaluate and understand Cloud sustainability, we propose the Cloud Sustainability Dashboard (CSD), which models and assesses the overall sustainability impact of services hosted in the Cloud. Evaluation models includes economic model, ecological model and social model. We apply our model to the Open Cirrus cloud computing testbed, an open source Cloud computing environment, to empirically evaluate the sustainability.
