Abstract
Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) has becoming a main limit factor for data transmission system with long distance and high speed. The influence of dispersion is both more apparent and less underestimated. In this paper, the principle and characteristics of the PMD is introduced, a transmission model is constructed through the nonlinear Schrodinger equation and Jones matrix and the model is analyzed numerically and simulated based on step Fourier transform. The results reveal that the wider pulse spectrum and the deviation of peak wavelength caused by the increase of the transmission distance will drop communication performance.
