Abstract :
The author investigates the use of smearing/desmearing filters in combination with linear modulation to achieve time diversity without bandwidth expansion in digital mobile radio systems. A low-complexity receiver structure for smeared data transmission in time-selective fading is described. The receiver is analyzed for perfect and noisy channel estimation and perfect interleaving. Results on the bit error performance show that the proposed data transmission system is very robust to Rayleigh fading and noisy channel estimation. In the proposed system, time-selective fading merely introduces an additional stationary Gaussian noise component. This makes the combination with coding straightforward. The first results on the performance of smeared data transmission with trellis-coded 8-PSK (phase-shift keying) are given
