  • Abstract
    The application of computer in industrial design has become very important with the development of information technology and network technology. The computerization of design tools will change the ideology and management of industrial design inevitably. In order to solve the problem of document management, communication and knowledge management in industrial design, this paper studied the position of industrial design in product development procedure; proposed the architecture of a collaborative platform for industrial design based on product lifetime management (PLM); analyzed the key technologies of building such a platform; and built a collaborative platform with features of industrial design. The platform establishes project management templates for industrial design and design document templates based on common expression mode, solves the problem of large size model transfer, realizes online browsing of 3D model and improves the communication among designers and product data sharing. The platform helps product design overcome the limitation of time and space, shortens product lifetime cycle and enhance the ability of personalized product development. All of the above features prove that this platform has preferable practicability.
