Abstract
This paper provides a brief overview of network management in a military satellite communications (milsatcom) context; focusing on the requirements, problems, issues and potential solutions. The concepts and features of the telecommunications management network (TMN) model are introduced. The pros and cons of TMN are explored and the potential ways of applying TMN as an enhancement to existing management systems are discussed. The paper concludes that the TMN model is both appropriate and applicable as a technical architecture for milsatcom management systems and will bring a range of benefits, both in terms of procurement and operation. A recommendation is made that there is a need for further investigation of the TMN model in order to appreciate the implications of its use in greater depth
