Abstract
The paper addresses the problem of designing a “virtual error free channel” for communication over unreliable wireless packet channels using hybrid error control schemes. For hybrid error control to be effective it is essential that an appropriate amount of forward error correction and automatic repeat requests be used. Optimal design methodologies for performance metrics of interest are developed. We also investigate the trade-offs involved when using interleaving to reduce the effect of burst errors. Asymptotic results are developed that can be used to develop simple design rules. In addition, several numerical examples are presented
