Abstract
Two well-designed auxiliary windings set into the stator slots can provide an appropriate supply for the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) of a brushless synchronous generator. This paper introduces and investigates the performance of the winding arrangements that employ the flux harmonics and prepare a suitable voltage source for the AVR of a 31.5 KVA generator. The model applied is based on finite element (FE) method, which is usually a comprehensive and applicable technique for this type of designing and modeling problem. The FE based time domain parametric model simulates the performance of the machine for different operating conditions to confirm that these simple auxiliary windings prepare a sufficient voltage for the power section of the AVR in all circumstances.
