Abstract
In this paper, the concept of root distribution envelope is introduced to characterize the locations of the lobing loop characteristic roots in the complex u-plane. The advantage is that the root envelope relates only to the setup angle P, thus, it simplifies the workpiece setup selection from two setup angles to only one setup angle. This leads to a new approach to lobing control in centerless grinding, designated as the pole-arrangement method. The principle of this method is to select a proper setup angle β based on the root envelope such that the lobing response is minimized under the present grinding disturbances. An example of using the pole-arrangement method for lobing control is also presented
