Abstract
Performance degradation of data communication systems due to PCM facilities in telephone networks is a well known problem. This degradation is more noticeable for ultra high speed modems recently under development. The earlier analytical works is inadequate for analyzing these degradations. In this paper we suggest a new discrete analytical technique to analyze the effects of PCM systems on performance of data communication modems. Our model relates degradation in performance to nonlinear characteristics of quantizers used in PCM systems. Using this model we were able to analyze the performance degradation in this new generation of ultra high speed data communication systems.
