Abstract
The purpose of this work is to evaluate the estimation of projection data in fully 3D PET reconstruction. The estimation is carried out to reduce the effect of the noise prior to the application of a reconstruction algorithm and it is based on a non-linear operator that takes into account the Poisson nature of the noise. The evaluation is statistical, based on a set of 3D phantoms and on numerical observers for some typical medical tasks such as total uptake in regions of interest and detectability of hot and cold spots. Our work demonstrates that, for the studied tasks, the projection data estimation is an efficacious approach to fully 3D PET reconstruction
