Abstract
This paper proposes a new approach to designing fuzzy systems. The essential scheme is to decompose the overall system into subsystems and then combine their individual outputs. A novel concept, known as competition is introduced and a hybrid learning algorithm is developed. The utility of the proposed approach is illustrated by a numerical example
