Abstract
This paper examines detection of a point target using a line array operating in an environment of noise generated by water flow past the array. It gives expressions for optimal and conventional array gains and broadband detection indices, considering both continuous and discrete arrays. The paper presents a simple suboptimal detector which often achieves performance close to the optimum. Finally it develops criteria for array design which yield near-optimal performance under various practical constraints.
