Abstract :
The scheme of the sliding window is known in information theory as well as in computer science and statistics. This scheme has two merits: it allows (i) to estimate a source´s statistics quite precisely and (ii) to adapt a code for changing statistics. However this scheme has a shortcoming, namely the necessity to use a large memory size. The imaginary sliding window scheme (ISW) is suggested which has the merits of the sliding window and allows one to reduce the memory size
