Abstract
ASIC technologies have been recognised to be the driving technological element for current and near future electronics products. This has already been well recognised by large companies and enterprises. However, the penetration within small and medium sized industries (SMIs) has been less successful. This fact has been recognised both by the European Union as well as national governments and special horizontal actions have been launched to enhance ASIC adoption within SMIs. In this paper we will summarise the key findings of various European surveys as well as discuss the impact of national and Pan-European special actions towards SMIs
