Abstract :
KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation) has installed UPFC (unified power flow controller), voltage-source FACTS (flexible AC transmission system) device at Kangjin substation, Kangjin-gun, Jeonnam province in May 2003. Kangjin UPFC is composed of 40 MVA shunt inverter and 40 MVA series inverter, and has three operation modes, STATCOM (static compensator), SSSC (static synchronous series compensator) and UPFC. Kangjin UPFC normally operates in UPFC mode. Kangjin UPFC project had been funded by KEPCO and Hyosung, and developed on technical cooperation with Siemens. Two year´s operation of Kangjin UPFC shows that UPFC availability has greatly increased after its first annual maintenance check-up. This paper describes the operation experience of Kangjin UPFC including major events, trouble shooting and efforts to enhance the reliability of Kangjin UPFC
