Abstract
The author discusses the present status of CERFACS, a European Centre for Research and Advanced Training in Supercomputing situated in Toulouse in southwestern France. The Parallel Algorithm Team has been a central group in CERFACS since the Center started in 1987. Its main focus is the efficient solution of large sparse systems on vector and parallel architectures. The author discusses in detail two such projects, namely the solution by direct methods using a multifrontal scheme and by iterative methods using a block projection method. Particular emphasis is placed on the portability of the algorithmic paradigms over a range of architectures so that high efficiency can be obtained with a minimum and isolated degree of tuning
