Abstract
An industrial application can easily require many thousands of cables to connect sensors and actuators to the control system. These connections are fixed multi core cables, fitted with either a plug or with terminals. Besides the cost of laying all of these and the risk of wiring errors, subsequent changes to the setup may require large parts of the factory floor to be rewired. Additionally, where sensors and actuators are mounted on moving parts, such as on a conveyor belt, a moving or rotating axis, or on a robot, the cables and connectors are subject to wear and tear through repeated movement or reconnection (tool changing).
