Abstract :
The paper presents the results of an extensive field study conducted in some wind farms in India with a view to assessing the extent of variation of wind speed and abnormal grid conditions. It is established through this study that considerable loss of power generation has been observed due to line outages and grid abnormalities. It is strongly recommended that such data must be effectively used in designing wind equipment and other subsystems. Patterns of generator transients occurring in practice are investigated to understand their nature. This study is relevant as induction generators are mostly employed in wind machines in contrast to synchronous generators used for bulk power generation. Transients in both field and laboratory models of induction generators are studied and typical results, both theoretical and experimental, are presented
