Abstract
This paper examines optimal and sub-optimal algorithms for the state filtering problem in discrete time non-linear systems. The optimal equations of sequential filtering are analyzed and general conditions are obtained which ensure multimodal character for the a-posteriori densities. These analysis is utilized in the discussion of the performance of sub-optimal linearized filters, and suggestions are made for their improvement in critical situations.
