Abstract
To transmit super high definition (SHD) images over 155 Mbps ATM long line networks, two transmission protocols (TCP/IP and XTP on IP) are evaluated from the point of sustained throughput. Finally, a new protocol for SHD images is developed. SHD images have resolutions of more than 2048×2048 pixels and consist of 96 Mbits for each image. Therefore, SHD images need a high throughput over long lines in order to transmit medical and professional high quality images. First, the TCP/IP protocol is assessed and its transmission rate is shown to be around 20 Mbps over 1,000 km fiber lines even at the speed of 155 Mbps. Second, XTP on IP is examined and proven to have a transmission rate of 70 Mbps with the same network and terminals. To boost the transmission rate, a new protocol using AAL5 on the ATM adaptation layer is proposed and a new transmission program is developed. This new transmission program provides sustained 100 Mbps over a fiber network with transmission distances over 10,000 km and implemented in a real multimedia network
