Abstract
The nonlinear oscillator model for speech signals has been previously applied to time-scale modification of speech. We report on the application of the model to speech synthesis and waveform coding. For speech synthesis, a new radial basis function representation of the oscillator feedback nonlinearity is introduced. The local approximation properties of this representation have been investigated and it is shown how it can be adapted to continuous speech on a frame-by-frame basis. For speech coding, synchronization of the nonlinear oscillator model to the original waveform is demonstrated and applied in the design of a new backward-adaptive speech coding system
