Abstract
From the nonstationary nature of practical images, the standard sampling scheme at the Nyquist rate yields redundant output in the uniform regions. This paper focuses on this problem by selectively subsampling in the background area. This process still yields high quality output because the background area is simply a bandlimited signal or its Nyquist rate is lower than that of the detail area. This effect contributes to the much higher compression rate in the uniform regions and thereby for the entire image while maintaining the same quality as the standard compression techniques.
