Abstract :
The last decade has seen a significant move towards the combining of the telecommunications and commercial computing and data networking markets and products. With the enormous growth in the use of the Internet and the potential of offering telecommunications services using Internet technologies, the world´s suppliers of telecommunications equipment are facing a monumental shift in the market place for their products. The potential to re-use existing products needs to be explored in order to gain maximum benefit from development investment. Network intelligence platforms appear to offer a real opportunity, at first sight any rate, for re-use in a packet-switched world. The aim, in both cases, is to enable new, innovative services to be developed rapidly, using easy to use programming interfaces, and for these services to be easily and rapidly deployed in a secure, reliable and managed environment. This presentation compares the two worlds at the level of network intelligence, identifying the common themes between the two worlds, the potential for re-using/modifying TDM-based products in the packet-switched environment, and the problems associated with this
