Abstract :
A method for overload control for the radio channel in personal communication networks (PCN) is presented. The method is used together with a priority-based scheduling technique. During congestion control periods the method enforces a source rate reduction to avoid sudden degradations in the quality-of-service (QoS). The control is activated when the aggregate rate crosses a predefined threshold that identifies congestion. A performance analysis (based on the construction of a two-dimensional Markov chain) is developed to optimize the system parameter values. The analysis shows that the method reduces the loss probability while attaining high channel utilization. In our approach, we consider a cellular environment where each cell consists of one base station and a number of mobile stations
