Abstract :
Abstract-The integrated starter alternator (ISA) based HEV design has launched an innovative debate from the point of view of selection of motor topology, which could best serve as a representative ISA. Furthermore, once the machine type is decided upon, appropriate control issues also assume prime importance. Both these issues are directly related to eventually achieving improved overall drive train efficiency. This paper aims to address both these issues based on modeling and simulation tests performed on an average sport utility vehicle (SUV) model, configured as a parallel HEV with an on-board ISA. The characteristics of suitable AC induction motors and permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSM), in addition to varying parallel ISA based HEV drive train control strategies, will be examined. Thereafter, relative results from the point of view of overall efficiencies will be presented. Finally, relative performance characteristics of the energy storage system (ESS) and the ISA machine, along with their regenerative braking capacity, will be quantified and compared for the proposed machine topologies and control strategies.
