Abstract
By using shift operators on linear spaces a theory of bilinear systems is presented. A restricted backward shift realization (RBSR) of a Volterra series input-output map is introduced. The RBSR is used to solve the bilinear realization problem. The RBSR is used to develop a theory of minimality for bilinear systems. Minimal bilinear systems are shown to be equivalent. The RBSR is used to develop a theory of reachability and observability for bilinear systems. An algorithm that computes the minimal bilinear realization of a Volterra series input-output map is given.
