Abstract :
A proposed interim solution for the evolution from narrowband voice and data to BISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) using existing technologies is discussed. The proposed solution uses analog broadcast video and digital voice over single-mode fiber in an architecture that is evolvable to BISDN. It is noted that the amount of FTTS (fiber-to-the subscriber) technology available is constantly increasing such that systems that may be widely deployed in 5-10 years may not have even been invented yet. For example, higher powered lasers and Bellcore´s passive photonic loop architecture are just two of many emerging technologies that may play a role in the evolution of FTTS systems
