  • Abstract
Exponential increase in demand for transmission capacity in the first 20-25 years of the 21 st century resulting in full utilisation of optical spectrum available in silica based optical fiber-roughly 250-350 nm, with necessary application of very flexible optical multiplexing and switching technology. None of currently available fibers is likely to meet requirements imposed by such systems. This shall spur development of new class “full spectrum” D-WDM fiber with flattened dispersion characteristics, negligible PMD and ability to handle very high levels of optical power. Anyway, transmission capacity of optical fiber as we know it may no longer be sufficient around 2025
