Abstract :
It is pointed out that the new synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) is fundamental to the realization of flexible and cost-effective managed transmission networks. Microwave radio-relay systems will have a role to play in the transmission of SDH-based signals within such networks. The authors review the required characteristics of these radio-relay systems and report on the international studies currently being undertaken. They also propose alternative network structures and topologies to suit new applications of SDH-compatible radio systems in managed transmission networks
