Abstract
It is anticipated that the application of partial unit memory (PUM) codes in magnetic and optical recording systems could provide a significant increase of the recording density without expensive technological advances. A novel technique that allows the design of the RLL and balanced PUM codes together with their minimal trellises is introduced
