Abstract
In this paper, a system for labeling of the vowels in continuous speech is developed. This system uses the log inverse period and the amplitude of the speech samples to segment the speech sample and to detect the vowel segment. The vowel segment is then labeled as a particular vowel by comparing it With stored reference patterns. Reference patterns spoken by a number of speakers are stored for each vowel. These reference patterns are stored as time-patterns of linear predictor coefficients. A distance measure based on the Yule-Walker equations is used for comparing the unknown vowel segments with the reference patterns. The unknown vowel segment is then given the label of the reference vowel which gives the minimum distance to it.
