Abstract :
The next-generation optical transport network will evolve from point-to-point connectivity to mesh networking, as a successor of the OTN with extended functionality, automatic switch optical networks (ASON) can provide fast and automatic provisioning with enhanced flexibility and survivability. Resource reservation protocol - traffic engineering (RSVP-TE) signaling is used to support connection setup, maintenance, and teardown in such a network In this paper, we study the performance of sequential signaling and batch arrival signaling schemes. We propose a novel batch arrival signaling scheme that is different from the existing sequential generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS)-based signaling protocols. We discuss tradeoffs between the two signaling schemes and compare them using simulation experiments, in terms of network blocking probability and reservation time. This work offers some insight into designing an efficient signaling protocol for the ASON networks.
