Abstract :
The concept ofthe Virtual Private Network (VPN) is now a reality within the UK. VPNs have been in operation now since the early 1990´s, the initial services were in fact international bilateral services to North America, where the VPN service had been developed in the early to mid 1980´s. The first being supplied by Sprint (then known as US Sprint), and quickly followed by AT&T and MCI. Theoretically, a VPN can be defined as the provision of a private voice and data network, implemented on a public switched network. The key in providing a VPN service lies in understanding what customers are actually looking for, and how their requirements can be met most effectively. This article describes the VPN service CustomNet. It has everything that a private network does and more. It has an integrated private dial plan, flexibility in call types, is competitively priced, provides comprehensive management information, and reduces cost
