Abstract
Examples of broadband communications carried out during the field trials BIGFON and BERKOM are presented. A possible evolution from existing narrowband ISDN (integrated services digital network) exchanges to a universal, ATM-(asynchronous-transfer-mode) based broadband ISDN exchange is outlined, and the current work in BERKOM and RACE is summarized
