Abstract :
Wear-out and breakdown of polymers used as insulating materials are closely related to the electrostatic energy dissipated in space charge regions. A fraction of this energy is radiated by electroluminescence which is a pre-breakdown warning and provides a method to study the mechanisms leading to structural degradation. Electroluminescence emissions from poly(ethylene 2, 6-naphthalate) are investigated. Integral and spectral analyses are realised with a photon counting system and a liquid nitrogen cooled charge coupled device camera allowing very long integration time
