Abstract
A composite-Gaussian model of speech is presented. This model takes into account many different modes of speech and lends itself for coding with Gaussian source coders. The problems associated with coding of this source are discussed. A mode detector is derived for a special case. The performance of a coding scheme employing the mode detector is evaluated and compared with a conventional scheme.
