Abstract
This paper defines a phase-only, gradient based adaptive algorithm analogous to the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. A phase-only perturbation algorithm is also defined. The author minimizes the mean square output power of a partially adaptive array by adjusting the phases of the phase shifter. A computer simulation of a linear array was used to verify the nulling capability of the least mean square phase-only (LMSP) and noncoherent phase perturbation (NPP) algorithms.
