Abstract :
Multirate systems play an important role in modern telecommunication. Examples of their application are filter banks for image or speech coding, transmultiplexers, sampling rate converters, and block processing systems. Usually they are designed under idealizing assumptions, neglecting wordlength effects as well as the required coding between analysis and synthesis part of the multirate system. Thus a rather different performance of an implemented system in comparison with the idealized one has to be expected. In general, not all of the resulting distortions can be calculated analytically. Nevertheless, they must be considered carefully during the design and implementation phase. We describe a method for measuring the performance of implemented multirate systems. The method is illustrated by measurement results
